Literacy

At Ashby Primary School we value the importance of providing students with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in literacy. We aim to make strong links between all areas of Literacy, which will enable our students to analyse, understand, communicate, and build relationships with others and with the world around them. Students engage in lessons for Reading and Viewing, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.

Reading and Viewing

We aim to build a love of reading and encourage reading a wide variety of texts. We celebrate students success in reading as well as celebrating the nights reading at home. At school, students are provided with a range of strategies to support them in decoding and understanding a range of multi-modal texts. They are encouraged to engage with a variety of text types and analyse the language author’s use to engage readers, to entertain, evoke feelings, convey information, or persuade the reader.

Writing

Celebrating students efforts in writing is something we value here at Ashby and is done by having a ‘Writer of the Week’ every week. This is published in the fortnightly newsletter. Students are provided with a range of authentic writing experiences that engage them in the whole writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. They are explicitly taught the structure of a range of text types including imaginative, informative, and persuasive. Students are taught a range of vocabulary and language features specific to text types and are encouraged to use that in their writing. Students are explicitly taught the 6+1 Writer’s Traits (Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions and Presentation) which enables them to communicate their ideas as an author.

Speaking and Listening

Students are provided with the skills to present their learning, or information in a range of ways for different purposes or audiences. They are encouraged to contribute to class and group discussions and consider other perspectives.
