At Ashby Primary School we value the importance of providing students with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in literacy. We aim to make strong links between all areas of Literacy, which will enable our students to analyse, understand, communicate, and build relationships with others and with the world around them. Students will engage in lessons for Reading and Viewing, Writing, and Speaking and Listening.

Reading and Viewing: students will be provided with a range of strategies to support them in decoding and understanding a range of multi-modal texts. They will be encouraged to engage with a variety of text types and analyse the language author’s use to engage readers, to entertain, evoke feelings, convey information, or persuade the reader.

Writing: students will be provided with a range of authentic writing experiences that engages them in the whole writing process of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. They will be explicitly taught the structure of a range of text types including imaginative, informative, and persuasive. Students will be taught a range of vocabulary and language features specific to text types and be encouraged to use that in their writing. Students will be explicitly taught the 6+1 Writer’s Traits (Ideas, Organisation, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions and Presentation) which will enable them to communicate their ideas as an author.

Speaking and Listening: students will be provided with the skills to present their learning, or information in a range of ways for different purposes or audiences. They will contribute to class and group discussions and consider other perspectives.
